UVA-Wise Hosts Annual STEM-H Day

On a cool Monday in October, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise hosted its annual STEM-H – science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health – Day. The event has been a tradition on campus for over a decade and is one of the landmarks of the fall semester. At Day in STEM-H, over 600 sixth grade students from across the region are welcomed by a host of student volunteers, professors, and professionals to initiate the day. Throughout the day, groups of students travel from station to station to learn about various topics and careers within STEM-H. Some of the popular stations this year included suturing a banana, using chemistry to carve a pumpkin, and binary code bracelets.

This hallmark event not only benefits the students in the region, but it brings together healthcare professionals from across the region and serves as a reminder of the importance of serving in Appalachia. Hear from five practicing healthcare workers and one pre-dental student below about why they love living in and serving the Appalachian region.

Live here, train here, work here, love here.
