Shadowing (Undergrad/HS)

Shadowing Opportunities at Ballad Facilities

The website above explains how high school and college students interested in medical careers can apply to shadow at Ballad Health hospitals and clinics. Pre-med college students will need to know the name of a doctor and the specialty they want to shadow in. If you don’t know a doctor you want to shadow, you can contact Leeann.Rasar@balladhealth.org. If you would like to explore options regarding what specialty/career you might be interested in (there are many paths to a health career) you are welcome to contact Alicia.D.Kallen@balladhealth.org. Both are happy to chat with you about potential matches with the appropriate person and profession for your shadowing activity.

Please read their website carefully, and contact Leeann or Alicia if you have any questions.

Junior High and High School Students

Wythe County Community Hospital offers a shadowing experience for interested junior high and high school students.  Must be at least 14 years of age.   This program is a good way to learn more about health care professions by observing health care professionals at work.  The program is designed for students who need less than 80 hours of observation in a clinical setting.  If interested, please contact Mary.Johnston@lpnt.net or 276-228-0200, extension 2270.

Students enrolled in higher education

Wythe County Community Hospital partners with institutions of higher education to give adult learners clinical rotations or internships in their chosen profession.  If interested, please contact Kristie.Walker@lpnt.net or 276-228-0273.

Observing Health Care Professionals at Carilion Clinic

The goal of this shadowing program is to enable participants to learn about health careers while shadowing/observing within Carilion facilities. Hands-on patient care or treatment while shadowing/observing is NOT permitted for the participants of this shadowing program.

  • Currently, applicants must be 16 years of age or older (although some areas require applicants be 18 years of age or older)
  • Placement is NOT guaranteed as it depends on staff availability and limited capacity.
  • Eligible applicants will be allowed to shadow up to three (3) days within a 12-month period.
  • Those seeking shadowing time at Carilion Clinic must submit a full, completed Application for Observation, including all required documentation to VSA in either Word or PDF format.

GMEC would love to hear about your shadowing experience.
Drop a note to director@swvagmec.com telling us what you find interesting, and if you have any appreciations for help along the way, suggestions on how to streamline the process, etc. We also welcome and publish blog posts from students shadowing, limit 350 words please.
