SWVA GMEC Executive Director Wendy Welch and professionals from LMU-DCOM will be leading a session on community nourishment projects at the 2024 South and Appalachia Creative Placemaking Summit next month!
THE COMMUNITY NOURISHMENT PROJECT
“Medical educators and students team up with housing residents to create infotaining programs using painting, sculpting, dance, foodways, and music to teach healthy lifestyle best practices. Medical students try a week of cooking for themselves from commodity food boxes. The program allows medical students to challenge the medical system discrimination against patients in persistent poverty, and challenge medical mistrust of doctors and nurses in the community through socializing and arts programming. The Community Nourishment Project is rural and Appalachia specific, working with intermingling arts and health through grassroots community engagement and local non-profit leadership.”
